When to see a general practitioner or Internists?

Internists are doctors who have studied over 3 years in specifically learning how to prevent, diagnose and treat adult problems. He/she is not a specialist who treats a single organ or disease, but treats the entire body of the patient. An internist does not deliver babies, treat children or perform surgical procedures. Whenever a person suffers from elevated blood pressure or high cholesterol or any other above mentioned problems, he/she needs to be taken first to an internal medicine expert. They are experts in not just diagnosing and treating the disease, but also prevent the advancement of disease by identifying and controlling the factors that are elevating the condition. Furthermore, you should also see an internist, if you have a chronic illness or in a situation where more than one disease strike simultaneously.

Internists can deal with any kind of problem a patient comes up with, no matter how common or rare, or how simple or difficult. If you have a serious health condition that will only be treated by a surgery or by consulting you to a specialist, the internist will be the one who will recommend you to one. And even after the treatment, you may have to see an internal medicine doctor for the whole life.
